In 1936, the British Government was sued in the District Court for the right to provide Namaz across the Gyanvapi complex. The claimants submitted seven witnesses, whereas the British Government offered 15 witnesses. The permission to offer Namaz at the Gyanvapi mosque was granted explicitly on August 15, 1937, with the caveat that such prayers could not be offered anyplace else in the Gyanvapi complex. The High Court denied the appeal on April 10, 1942, maintaining the lower court's verdict. `Pandit Somnath Vyas, Dr Ramrang Sharma, and others filed a lawsuit in Varanasi court on October 15, 1991, seeking the construction of a new temple at Gyanvapi as well as the freedom to worship. Two applications were filed in the High Court in 1998 on behalf of Anjuman Inazaniya Masajid and the UP Sunni Waqf Board Lucknow, challenging the ruling. On March 7, 2000, Pandit Somnath Vyas passed away. Vijay Shankar Rastogi, a former district government advocate, was appointed as a plaintiff in this...

The Court ordered the ASI to form a "five-member committee of distinguished individuals who are professionals and well-versed in archaeology," according to the Court. The court ordered that "two of the experts should ideally belong to the minority community." The ASI head has also been instructed to appoint a distinguished person to act as an observer for the committee, and the UP government has been told to cover the cost of the survey. "The Archaeological Survey's primary goal will be to determine if the religious structure currently standing at the 'disputed site' is a superimposition, change, or addition, or if there is any structural overlapping of any type, with or over any previous religious building." The following are some of the directives given by the court: 1) Artefacts must be appropriately kept during the survey. 2) The committee must guarantee that Muslims are not stopped from performing namaz at the contested site while completi...

It all began in 1991, when counsel Vijay Shankar Rastogi submitted a petition on behalf of the Swayambhu Jyotirlinga Bhagwan Vishweshwar, the temple's principal deity, stating that Maharaja Vikramaditya built a temple on the site some 2,050 years ago. They said that the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb razed the temple in 1669, and that the mosque was built on top of the remains. The queen of Indore, Ahilya Holkar, erected a new Kashi Vishwanath temple close to the mosque in 1780, approximately a century later. Many believe it to be Lord Shiva's most important shrine. Vishveshvara or Vishvanath, one of Shiva's 12 Jyotirlingas, is also referenced in the Skanda Purana. They argued that the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act did not apply since the mosque was built on top of a partially ruined temple, and numerous remains of the temple can still be seen today. The trial court in Varanasi formulated preliminary issues in 1997, with the major point of dispute being whether or n...

The Kashi Vishwanath temple, built on the instructions of Queen Ahilya Holkar, is often regarded as Lord Shiva's most important shrine. It is one among Shiva's 12 Jyotirlingas, Vishveshvara or Vishvanath, and is described in the Skanda Purana as one of the most significant. Hindus from all across the country go to the temple, which is usually bustling with activity. In March 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who represents the Varanasi seat in the Lok Sabha, lay the foundation stone for the Kashi Vishwanath temple corridor. The objective is to adorn the temple and the surrounding region with Makrana marble, Kota granite, Mandana, and Baleshwar stones in order to extend and enhance it. The temple would be seen clearly from the Ganga ghat after the Rs 1,000 crore renovation is completed. The construction of the Kashi Vishwanath corridor has caused Muslims in the vicinity to be concerned. During the time the platform was being dismantled, S M Yaseen, joint secretary of the (AIM)...

The controversy dates back to 1984, when 558 Hindu seers from throughout India gathered in the centre of Delhi. They gathered for the first religious parliament, which included a statewide appeal for Hindus to claim the holy temples in Varanasi, Mathura, and Ayodhya, among other resolutions. Years later, as the Babri Masjid and Ram Janmabhoomi conflict reached its apex in the 1990s, with the desire for a Ram Mandir gaining traction, the push to reclaim ownership of the mosques in Mathura and Kashi gained traction as well. While the campaign referred to roughly 3000 mosques, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindu religious organisations had their sights set on these two mosques in particular. The Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura, West Uttar Pradesh, was erected next to Lord Krishna's temple, while the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, East Uttar Pradesh, was built next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Fears about what this might mean for the country led the PV Narsimha Rao administration...
